RelateCare Susan Ellingsen Award 2026. The award goes to…

This year, RelateCare is honored to announce Registered Nurse Anitra Thornton as the recipient of the 2026 Susan Ellingsen Clinical Excellence Award, in recognition of the compassion, reliability, and leadership she has brought to her colleagues, her patients, and the wider community.

Anitra has been part of the RelateCare team since March 2021, working as a triage nurse on many different programs such as Duke Health and JPS Health Network. Bringing with her a clinical background in mental health and triage nursing, she brings deep empathy and understanding to every patient interaction. This combination has been recognized more than once during her time with RelateCare, including a previous Employee Excellence Award for her standard of care and her contribution to the wider team.

What stood out in Anitra’s nominations this year was the way she shows up for those around her. Colleagues describe her as a nurse who is consistently willing to help when questions arise about new processes and approaches every interaction with patients and team members alike, as a chance to bring a little more comfort into someone’s day. Her clinical expertise is matched by a generosity of spirit, and her presence has become a steadying influence on the wider clinical team.

Anitra’s commitment to caring for others extends well beyond her shifts. In her own time, she is actively involved in missionary work, dedicating much of it to serving her local community and travelling internationally to support people in need, most recently on a mission trip to Africa. As one of her nominators put it, the values Anitra brings to her work are not only exemplified at RelateCare but in everything she does to bring joy and comfort to hurting people.

It is this consistency, compassion and the dedication Anitra’s brings that so closely embodies the spirit of the Susan Ellingsen Clinical Excellence Award. Anitra is a truly worthy recipient, and everyone at RelateCare extends our heartfelt congratulations.
